Distinction at the International Student Competition DATA MINING CUP 2011

The international student competition DATA MINING CUP is organized by the Prudsys real time analytics company the last 12 years and is one of the biggest data-mining competitions. Its goal is to highlight the best up-and-coming scientists in the area of Data Mining. The task of DATA MINING CUP 2011 was the development of model for predicting the next transaction during the visit of a user in an e-commerce website.

The competition lasted 6 week and attracted large international participation: 104 teams from 83 universities and 20 countries registered to take part in the competition, submitting 50 team solutions. After evaluation the 10 best teams were selected and received a travel grant of 1000 euro to present their solutions in the conference which took place in Leipzig, Germany. The final standings, which were announced during the conference, brought the team of the Department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the 7th place and very close to the top. The solution which received the distinction was submitted by the PhD student of the Department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Eleftherios Spyromitros-Xioufis.
