Distinction at the 19th International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems

PhD student Eleftherios Spyromitros-Xioufis and Lecturer Grigorios Tsoumakas achieved the 1st and 2nd place respectively at the “music instruments” track of the Music Information Retrieval competition that was organized in conjunction with the 19th International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems (ISMIS 2011). Goal of the “music instruments” track of the competition was the automatic recognition of pairs of instruments playing together in music tracks.

The competition attracted a great amount of interest from the Data Mining and Music Information Retrieval communities: 292 teams with 357 members where registered to the competition, 150 of which actively participated submitting more than 12000 solutions. The 1st place award included a 1000 dollar prize and an invitation to prepare a paper describing the solution for inclusion in the ISMIS 2011 proceedings and presentation at the conference.
